Amidst the joy and excitement of the festive season, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reminding Jamaicans to exercise caution when displaying empty containers bearing their relatives’ personal information.
The JCF emphasizes the need to take proactive steps to protect personal data and security during this season of giving.
Removing shipping information to deter fraudsters
Head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Corporate Communications Unit, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Stephanie Lindsay, recently addressed this concern during a JIS Think Tank session.
She underscored the practicality of using these barrels for garbage disposal but highlighted the necessity of distorting shipping information as a countermeasure against potential fraud and criminal activity.
SSP Lindsay urged persons to take simple yet effective precautions, such as using a marker or similar means to obscure key details on the containers.
This seemingly minor action can thwart the tactics employed by fraudsters who exploit personal information to gain access to unsuspecting individuals.
By distorting this information, recipients can help protect themselves and their loved ones from potential scams.
Guard against deceptive intruders
One tactic employed by criminals involves exploiting the information displayed on these containers.
Criminals may present themselves at your doorstep, claiming to have been sent by a relative from abroad and asserting their connection to the person in question.
SSP Lindsay said that those armed with detailed personal information can attempt to establish trust and gain access to the premises of others.
She added that they manipulate the personal information displayed on the barrel to deceive and take advantage of recipients. By distorting this information, you can deter these deceptive intruders and safeguard your home and family during the holiday season.
Secure transportation with familiar faces
SSP Lindsay further emphasized the importance of securing transportation when dealing with luggage and valuables, especially during the bustling travel season.
She recommends driving with trusted individuals when seeking transportation services.
She cautioned against blindly selecting transportation providers, as past investigations have revealed cases where the very person chosen for transportation from the airport may be involved in orchestrating thefts.
These unfortunate incidents occur when criminals intercept travelers, leading to the loss of belongings.
Maintain discretion when traveling with valuables
She also advised individuals to exercise discretion when traveling with valuables. Keeping a low profile and avoiding ostentatious displays of wealth can also reduce the risk of becoming a target for theft or other criminal activities.
