On June 17, the Consulate General of Jamaica in New York shipped off over 1,400 computer devices to Jamaica to support the government’s ‘One Device Per Child’ initiative.
This was the fourth shipment of tablets and computers donated by the consulate. Friday’s shipment now brings the total number of devices donated by the New York Consulate to 4,600 – a value of USD 539,646.80.
Consul General Alsion Roach-Wilson stated that “empowering our students and helping them realize their full potential continues to feature prominently on the agenda of the Consulate General of Jamaica, New York.”
She added that “this initiative would not have been possible without the support of our corporate sponsors – our #dearfriendsofJamaica and our #JamaicanDiaspora, who have given generously to ensure that this vision of ‘leaving no Jamaican student behind’, is a reality.”
Consul General Wilson says plans are already in progress to dispatch the fifth shipment within the next three weeks.
The Jamaican government launched the ‘One Laptop or Tablet Per Child’ program in October 2020, which aims to provide needy students with the requisite tools to function in the online teaching and learning environment.
