Suriname police have detained five people, including four believed to be Guyanese, as they continue their investigations into the murder of 53-year-old shopkeeper Yuanlan Chen.
The Police Public Relations division said three of the Guyanese, who are between the age of 15 and 18 years were in the country illegally and a 30-year-old taxi driver, had also been arrested on Monday.
The authorities said when the five suspects were detained, one of them reportedly threw out an object that later turned out to be a gun with six cartridges.
They said both the taxi driver’s vehicle and the weapon have been seized and following consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the five persons have been arrested and will be charged by the police.
Police said Chen was shot and killed on December 14 and they are appealing to eyewitnesses to contact the Capital Offenses Department as the investigation continues.
