In a move signaling closer regional integration, Bermuda is poised to step up its engagement with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) by becoming a full-fledged member.
This initiative, announced during a recent Throne Speech, reflects a growing aspiration to deepen ties with Caribbean nations.
Renewing a vision of unity
Governor Rena Lalgie shared that the aspiration for Bermuda to transition from an associate to a full member of CARICOM resonates with the vision set forth by former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith.
This vision emphasizes strengthening the bonds that Bermuda shares with the Caribbean in terms of heritage, family, and culture.
Commemoration and consultation
As Bermuda commemorates two decades of association with CARICOM, it views this milestone as an opportune moment to consider a more integrated role within the community.
“In this anniversary year, the Government will renew the vision of Dame Jennifer, initiating a consultation process leading to full membership in CARICOM,” Governor Lalgie said.
Bermuda became a CARICOM associate member on July 3, 2003.
