An indictment unsealed in the Southern District of Florida on Tuesday has shed light on a case of human smuggling, with a Bahamian national at its center.
Vandrick Nelson Smith, also known as Muggy and Vans, 33, was apprehended on March 6 in the Bahamas following a request by the United States.
This arrest pertained to charges filed under seal in the Southern District of Florida in November 2023.
Allegations unveiled
Court documents reveal Smith’s alleged involvement in a human smuggling ring aiming to ferry migrants illegally from The Bahamas to the United States via boat.
Among these migrants were individuals from Colombia, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and other nations.
The operation purportedly revolved around payments made by migrants or their associates for their illicit passage into the United States.
The indictment asserts Smith’s direct involvement in three maritime human smuggling incidents, one of which tragically resulted in the loss of five lives.
These incidents occurred around March 6, 2021; January 22, 2022; and August 8, 2022, respectively.
Tragic losses
Reports are that on January 22, 2022, migrants boarded a vessel in The Bahamas bound for Florida.
However, soon after departure, the vessel encountered engine failure, leading to its capsizing.
The aftermath saw a valiant rescue effort by the US Coast Guard, saving the lone survivor found clinging to the overturned vessel on January 25, 2022.
Facing the charges
Smith faces a litany of charges, including five counts of attempting to bring noncitizens to the United States resulting in death, directly linked to the tragic events of January 2022.
Additionally, he stands accused of conspiring to bring noncitizens to the United States for profit, a scheme that jeopardized lives and resulted in fatalities.
Other charges include attempting to bring noncitizens to the United States for profit and attempting to aid certain noncitizens in entering the United States.
If Smith is found guilty of attempting to bring noncitizens to the United States resulting in death, he could face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
