The police in St Thomas are investigating the tragic stabbing death of 14-year-old Teyanna Sutherland, who was attacked and killed at a home in Blue Mahoe, Prospect, on Wednesday morning.
The man suspected of carrying out the gruesome murder was later shot and killed by police officers responding to the scene.
Sutherland, who was visiting Jamaica from overseas, was reportedly staying with relatives and her father — a policeman — when the incident occurred. According to early reports, a man believed to be of unsound mind gained access to the house through an open grill and attacked the teenager.
The police said the two appeared to have had a struggle, during which Sutherland was stabbed multiple times. Despite her injuries, she was reportedly able to wound her attacker and call her father for help. Her father arrived shortly after and found her in the kitchen with multiple stab wounds. She was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead.
Residents told investigators they saw a man fleeing the area wearing bloody clothes. Acting on that information, the police conducted a search of a nearby concrete structure, where they found a trail of blood and bloodied clothing. Inside, officers were reportedly attacked by a naked man armed with a machete. The police opened fire, fatally shooting the suspect.
A search of the dwelling led to the discovery of Sutherland’s phone and jewellery. The suspect has not yet been identified.
The matter has been reported to the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), as is protocol in such cases.
The Constabulary Communications Network has confirmed the incident but said further details will be provided as investigations continue.
