The Morgan family is honoring the life and legacy of their patriarch, Denroy Morgan, with a special birthday celebration at the family estate in St. Thomas on May 16. The beloved reggae trailblazer would have turned 80 years old on May 15.
The event was announced via Instagram by his son, Gramps Morgan, who invited fans, friends, and well-wishers to join in what promises to be an uplifting tribute steeped in music, culture, and love.
Though Denroy passed away at age 76 in March 2022, his influence continues to echo through the global reggae community. A pioneering voice in reggae fusion, Denroy captivated audiences with hits like “I’ll Do Anything for You” and laid the foundation for his children’s musical journey.
Among his most famous legacies is the Grammy Award-winning group Morgan Heritage, which Denroy helped guide in its early days. Often referred to as the “Royal Family of Reggae,” Morgan Heritage blended roots reggae with elements of soul, R&B, and dancehall, earning a place among reggae’s elite.
This year’s celebration carries extra emotional weight, following the untimely passing of Denroy’s son and Morgan Heritage lead singer, Peetah Morgan, in February 2024. His powerful voice and charismatic stage presence were central to the group’s global success, and his absence will no doubt be deeply felt during the tribute.
Set against the lush backdrop of the St. Thomas countryside, the event will feature live music, Nyabinghi drumming, and performances from the next generation of Morgans, ensuring that both Denroy and Peetah’s legacies continue to inspire.
In addition to the musical tributes, the celebration will include a limited sneaker giveaway for babies, children, and women, happening between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., underscoring the family’s enduring commitment to community outreach.
“Join us as we celebrate the life, love, and legacy of our king, our father, our hero,” Gramps Morgan shared online, expressing the family’s desire to honor their father in a way that reflects his spirit—joyful, generous, and grounded in unity.
As the reggae world continues to mourn, remember, and rejoice, this gathering shines a light on what still lives on through music, family, and cultural pride.
