Jamaican-American artist Klassik Frescobar, whose Soca career recently started in 2019, is ascending to new heights thanks to his 2020 single “Looking Good”.
The 31-year old artist was born in New York but raised in Kingston. While living with his grandparents in Jamaica as a child, the multi-talented singer fell in love with soca music. “We mostly listened to the radio and that’s where I would always hear Soca music. It was something interesting and different and that’s why I fell in love with it,” Klassik told CNW Network.
The love of soca followed Klassik, whose real name is Kamaal Burrowes, back to New York when he migrated again at 13-years-old. He said that although he became influenced by other musical genres, he was never too far removed from his roots. “There were always a lot of soca or dancehall parties happening so it was easy to stay connected to the community,” he said.
At the age of 17, he began to take music seriously as a career by battle-rapping and writing songs. But it wasn’t until he moved to Miami in 2014 that he became more professionally involved in Caribbean music. According to Klassik, it was easier to immerse himself in the Caribbean community in South Florida.
“It was just easier in Florida. The Caribbean community in South Florida is so close-knit.. within six months, you could know everybody,” he says. Soca parties across South Florida, which happen less frequently than in New York, also helped to push him in the direction of soca music.
In the summer of last year, an opportunity to get on a Soca riddim was presented to him. Unbeknownst to Klassik Frescobar, his breakout record “Boom” on the Fugeo Riddim would change the trajectory of his career.
This year, despite COVID-19, the artist has seen even more success. Klassik said pandemic had forced him to think outside the box as far as writing music. His goal was to release a record that would do well on social media, and eventually, in clubs and at concerts. The outcome was “Looking Good”, released in April, which went viral across various social media platforms due to its accompanying challenge.
Aiding in the success of the single was popular American Rapper Cardi B, who had shared his song on her Instagram page, to her over 76 million followers.

Due to positive reception of the record, Klassik Frescobar has collaborated with Soca artists Kisha, Trinidad Ghost, Marzville, and Trinidad Madman for the “Looking Good” remix.
The original version and the remix have together amassed over 200,000 views since their releases.
Klassik Frescobar’s music is currently on all streaming platforms, in addition to being played on radio stations across the diaspora, including in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Klassik’s says he plans to share his music with South Florida fans in the form of shows, as soon as he’s able to.
