Jamaican actor Oliver Samuels was recently bestowed with a prestigious Living Legend Award courtesy of the renowned Jamaican beer company, Red Stripe.
The ceremony took place on March 8 at the historic Little Theatre in St. Andrew, a venue that has witnessed countless performances by the esteemed actor over the years.
Known affectionately as the King of Jamaican comedy, Mr. Samuels rose to prominence through his iconic role in the popular 1980s TV show “Oliver at Large.”
Graciously accepting the honor, the veteran actor expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the recognition, particularly on the very stage where his illustrious career began.
“It is really an amazing surprise. The fact that Red Stripe thought it fit to have awarded me this Living Legend Award is just amazing and incredible … because it’s 54 years me a wuk inna the business,” he said. “I started right here in this space. … Don’t yuh think me deserve it?” he asked the audience to which he got a resounding “yes.”
Samuels graciously remarked, “I accept this award on behalf of all who’ve worked with me over the years.” Among his current cast members, he paid tribute to the late Volier Johnson, with whom he shared entertainment platforms for decades.
The highlight of the evening was the performance of Samuels’ latest comedy, “Teet an Tung,” in which he takes the lead. Produced by Oliver Samuels Entertainment Ltd and directed by Pablo Hoilett, the play also features talented Jamaican actors Deon Silvera, Audrey Reid, and Tesfa Edwards.
In “Teet an Tung,” a phrase derived from a longer Jamaican saying emphasizing unity despite disagreements, Samuels portrays Joe, a middle-aged businessman. Joe has been in a common-law union with Muriel (Silvera) for over three decades, but her main concern is his reluctance to marry her or even disclose his reasons.
Having toured North America and Europe over the past few months, the production’s stint at the Little Theatre concludes on March 22 to resume touring.
