Jamaica prepares for Emancipation and Independence celebrations

As Jamaica gears up to commemorate its independence, festivities are set to unfold from July 31 to August 6, highlighting the nation’s enduring accomplishments.

The Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport has joined forces with J. Wray & Nephew Limited for this year’s celebrations, backed by a sponsorship of $20 million. 

The formal agreement was inked on Wednesday, June 12, at the Ministry’s New Kingston offices.

A symbolic collaboration

Hon. Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, underscored the significance of J. Wray & Nephew Limited’s partnership, citing it as a testament to the company’s longstanding commitment to Jamaica. 

She emphasized that this collaboration epitomizes the “spirit of Independence.”

Shared commitment to heritage

Jean-Phillippe Beyer, Managing Director of J. Wray & Nephew Limited, echoed Minister Grange’s sentiments, affirming the company’s $20 million commitment to support a series of events across the island.

He highlighted their dedication to promoting the essence of Jamaican culture and identity through these celebrations.

Exciting line-up of events

The upcoming celebrations promise a diverse range of activities each day, kicking off with a media launch on June 20 and culminating in the Grand Gala on August 6, Independence Day. 

Key events include the Jamaica Festival Song, the Jamaica Festival Queen, and the Jamaica Gospel Star Competitions, all of which are free and open to the public.

Organizational oversight

The Ministry, in collaboration with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), spearheads the execution of the Emancipation/Independence events, ensuring that the festivities resonate across communities nationwide.
