Iconic musician ‘Shaggy’ to be recognized at Jamaica’s Independence Anniversary Gala in New York

Jamaica’s multi-Grammy Award-winning recording artiste Orville “Shaggy” Burrell is set to receive recognition, as he stands among seven distinguished Jamaicans to be honored at the 61st Independence Anniversary Gala in New York next month.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Proud and Strong.”

Accompanying Burrell in this prestigious acknowledgment are notable individuals who have made significant contributions to various fields. 

Other Jamaican greats will be honored

Among the honourees are Stephen Facey, esteemed chairman of the Pan Jamaica Group; Dr Rosemarie Ingleton, a distinguished dermatologist, and successful entrepreneur; Marc Jerome, accomplished president of Monroe College; Marlon Lindsay, visionary CEO of 21 Cent Ed; Sheryl Lee Ralph OJ, an acclaimed award-winning actress; and Ruel Stephenson, the dedicated assistant chief of the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The highly anticipated event, scheduled for August 19, will be graced by the presence of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who is slated to deliver an address.

Prime Minister Holness eagerly expressed his enthusiasm to personally extend congratulations to each honoree, acknowledging their dedication, talent, and unwavering commitment to their respective fields. He emphasized that their achievements have not only brought immense pride to Jamaica but have also had a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals.

Burrell, known for his global influence in reggae music and philanthropy, will be recognized as an international cultural icon.

Facey will receive the prestigious award for his remarkable business leadership and development initiatives in Jamaica.

 Dr. Ingleton will be honored with the Jamaica Independence Award for her outstanding contributions in both the medical and business spheres.

Jerome, being a beacon of excellence in education and a driving force behind Jamaica’s development, will be rightfully acknowledged. 

Lindsay will be commended for his exceptional leadership in the fields of STEM education and entrepreneurship. 

Ralph, whose exceptional contributions to film and television have been widely acclaimed, will also be presented with the Jamaica Independence Award. 

Lastly, Stephenson’s remarkable achievements in law enforcement and community development will be honored and celebrated.

Speaking about the significance of the event, Consul General Wilson emphasized that the annual gala provides an excellent platform to celebrate Jamaica’s rich culture and heritage. 

Wilson further said that beyond the festivities, the gathering aims to unite Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica in commemorating the nation’s independence while fostering support for various charitable causes back home, all made possible through the generosity of the attendees.
