“Bam Bam: The Sister Nancy Story” is set to premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, held in New York from June 5-16.
Among the nine spotlight documentaries, this film delves into the influential career and enduring legacy of dancehall pioneer Ophlin Russell, better known as Sister Nancy, famed for her iconic track “Bam Bam.”
Since its release in 1982, “Bam Bam” has achieved legendary status, resonating through generations and genres, especially within hip-hop. Notably, it was sampled in Kanye West’s “Famous” and Jay-Z’s 2017 hit “Bam” featuring Damian Marley, which went Gold in the US. Originally part of Sister Nancy’s debut album “One, Two,” the track itself samples Toots and The Maytals’ song of the same name.
Billboard once dubbed “Bam Bam” as “a strong contender for the title of most sampled reggae song of all time.”
Reflecting on the numerous samples of her work, Nancy expressed mixed feelings, noting, “They sample it so many times but none of them is my favorite… they know I live in the U.S. and nobody tries to contact me to do it in person. If they had contacted me and I would do it for them live then I would have a favorite.”
Spotlights Sister Nancy’s journey to secure song rights
Directed by Alison Duke and produced by Duke alongside Ngardy Conteh George, the documentary captures Sister Nancy’s struggles and triumphs in the music industry. It particularly highlights her 34-year battle to reclaim the rights to her signature song, which had grown exponentially in popularity, overshadowing her own recognition as an artist.
In 2014, a turning point came when Nancy’s daughter noticed “Bam Bam” featured in a Reebok commercial. This prompted Nancy to seek legal advice, eventually leading to a partial settlement where she secured compensation for the last decade and gained 50% rights to her song. Empowered by this victory, Nancy boldly left her banking career to tour full-time.
The film showcases Nancy’s life on tour, enriched with live performances, behind-the-scenes glimpses, archival footage, and personal interviews. A roster of influential artists such as Janelle Monáe, DJ Kool Herc, Pete Rock, DJ Red Alert, and others provide their insights, celebrating Nancy’s indelible impact on music.
The documentary also features ethereal recreations of significant moments in Nancy’s life, offering an intimate portrait of her journey.
This year’s Tribeca Film Festival will showcase 103 feature films from 114 filmmakers representing 48 countries, including 86 world premieres, further cementing the festival’s reputation as a global cinematic hub.
