Jamaican schoolteacher allegedly killed by husband in Canada

A 64-year-old Jamaican-born schoolteacher was reportedly killed by her husband in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Estella Wheeler, a teacher at Africentric Alternative School in North York, Toronto.

Charged with second-degree murder

Trevor Wheeler was apprehended and charged with second-degree murder, according to reports from Canadian media outlet City News. 

Tragic discovery

Authorities were alerted to the scene in the early hours of Wednesday, responding to a distress call from the couple’s semi-detached home in Vaughan. 

Upon arrival, they found Estella Wheeler with severe injuries. 

Despite immediate medical attention, she succumbed to her wounds at the scene.

Trevor Wheeler was subsequently taken into custody and charged in connection with his wife’s death.

Unconfirmed cause of death

Although initial reports suggested Estella had been fatally stabbed, official confirmation regarding the cause of death has not been released by the York Regional Police. 

A post-mortem examination is slated to shed light on the circumstances surrounding her passing in the days ahead.

Furthermore, information on whether other persons were at the house at the time of the incident has not been disclosed by law enforcement.

Community shock and mourning

Estella Wheeler, known for her dedication and warmth as a grade seven and eight teacher had been a fixture in the community.

Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief at the heartbreaking turn of events, remembering Estella as a vibrant and compassionate individual. 

Fondly recalled for her melodious singing while tending to chores in the backyard, Estella’s presence had left an indelible mark on those around her. 

Conversely, Trevor was noted for his outgoing demeanor. 

Reports are that the couple, having relocated from Jamaica, had been prominent figures in their neighborhood for approximately 15 years. 

Trevor operated a scrap metal company, while Estella poured her energy into shaping young minds at the North York-based school.

Tributes pour in

Hugh Reynolds, the Principal of the Africentric Alternative School, paid tribute to Estella’s invaluable contributions to the school community. 

Describing her as a beloved and dedicated team member who fostered meaningful connections with both students and staff, Reynolds emphasized her unwavering kindness and generosity. 

Meanwhile, Canadian politician and Toronto City Councillor, James Pasternak, sadness over Estella’s passing, condemning the alleged violence that led to her demise. 

Extending heartfelt condolences to her grieving family, Pasternak hailed Estella as a passionate educator cherished by all who knew her.
