Starting his address with the Jamaican slang, “big up unu self,” Dr. Bowen seamlessly transitioned between English and Chinese throughout his speech. He also expressed his gratitude to the key individuals who significantly contributed to his educational journey.

“Thanks to the persons who have helped me along the way, I will forever be indebted to you,” Dr. Bowen said, as he expressed his sincere appreciation to those who supported him, helping him pave the path towards Black excellence.

Dr. Bowen’s journey to excellence

Originally from Montego Bay, St James, Jamaica, Dr. Bowen spent his formative years in Chambers Pen, Hanover.

After graduating from Cornwall College, he decided to further his studies in China as a cost-effective alternative to Caribbean medical education.

Anhui Medical University, a provincial key university jointly established by the Anhui Provincial Government, the National Health and Family Planning Commission, and the Ministry of Education, played host to Dr. Bowen’s academic performance.

In September, he will be specializing in Orthopedic surgery at The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University.

Previously known as the Shanghai South-eastern Medical College, Anhui Medical University was established in 1926 in the capital Hefei, Anhui, China. The globally-renowned institution offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses in various disciplines including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, public health, and preventive medicine.

The crossroad of global diversity and education

The university’s student body is as diverse as its academic offerings, hosting students from several countries including Korea, Japan, the United States, India, Canada, Australia, and South Asia.
