Jamaican-American Congresswoman champions bill to recognize Bob Marley 

On Tuesday, February 13, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke introduced a resolution to the United States House of Representatives, advocating for the acknowledgment of the life and enduring influence of renowned reggae artist Robert ‘Bob’ Nesta Marley.

The resolution, symbolizing a tribute to Marley’s impact on culture and activism, was ceremoniously presented to Ziggy Marley, son of the reggae legend, during a special screening of the film BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE at the Motion Pictures Association in Washington.

Recognizing Marley’s Legacy

In her address, Congresswoman Clarke emphasized Marley’s multifaceted legacy, portraying him not only as a musical genius but also as a fervent advocate for social change and a beacon of love and unity. 

She underscored Marley’s teachings of kindness and compassion, asserting that his wisdom continues to resonate profoundly, guiding hearts worldwide.

A cinematic tribute

Clarke anticipates a revival of Marley’s music with the release of BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE.

Expressing her anticipation for the impact of the film, Congresswoman Clarke hailed BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE as a vehicle for reintroducing Marley’s timeless music and captivating narrative to audiences globally. 

She envisioned the movie as a catalyst for a resurgence of Marley’s influence, transcending borders and fostering a renewed appreciation for his artistry and ethos.

Unveiling Marley’s story

Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks, lauds the portrayal of Marley’s life in the film.

Ambassador Marks echoed Congresswoman Clarke’s sentiments, celebrating the long-awaited exploration of Marley’s journey and upbringing in Jamaica.

She emphasized the relevance of Marley’s message in contemporary times, particularly amidst global turmoil, highlighting the need for justice, hope, and love championed by the reggae icon.

Scholarships in Marley’s name

Paramount Pictures announces educational scholarships in collaboration with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

Dede Lea, Executive Vice President for Global Public Policy and Government Relations at Paramount Pictures, unveiled a partnership with The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to establish The Bob Marley: One Love Social Impact Scholarships. 

Paramount Pictures is giving $50,000 to support the ten scholarships that will be awarded to students attending Bowie State University, Clark Atlanta University, Dillard University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, Spelman College, Texas Southern University, and Xavier University of Louisiana.  The Bob Marley: One Love Social Impact Scholarships are designed to honor Marley’s legacy as a cultural icon and his message of unity by supporting ten rising sophomore, junior, and senior students with $5,000 scholarships in pursuit of degrees in community organizing, nonprofit management, public policy, or social justice related degree programs who are attending the  selected Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). 

Scholarship details

The scholarships, a tribute to Marley’s enduring legacy and message of unity, aim to empower students pursuing degrees in community organizing, nonprofit management, public policy, or related fields. 

Ten scholarships, each worth $5,000, will be awarded to students attending Bowie State University, Clark Atlanta University, Dillard University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, Spelman College, Texas Southern University, and Xavier University of Louisiana.

Lea recognizes the pivotal role of Ambassador Marks in the creation of BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE.

Commending Ambassador Marks for her instrumental contribution, Ms. Lea acknowledged the Jamaican government’s support in facilitating the film’s production.
