Spearheaded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), this virtual platform, valued at over $30 million, is poised to revolutionize engagement with the Jamaican Diaspora, particularly in the realms of trade and investment.

Empowering diaspora-led investments

With a primary focus on fostering entrepreneurship and catalyzing business development, JAM-DEM holds the promise of attracting diaspora-led investments.

By nurturing innovation within Jamaica’s priority sectors, the platform aims to invigorate the nation’s economy while leveraging the expertise and resources of its diaspora community.

A catalyst for collaboration and empowerment

A Jamaica Information Service (JIS) article noted that during a recent event, Lofters hailed JAM-DEM as a cutting-edge instrument to facilitate enhanced communication, collaboration, and empowerment within the diaspora.

She emphasized the platform’s pivotal role in recognizing and harnessing the invaluable contributions of Jamaicans abroad for the nation’s advancement.

Amplifying diaspora impact

Recognizing the significant contributions of diaspora communities to their countries of origin, particularly in bolstering economic sectors and driving social development, the IOM underscores the potential for further amplification of these impacts through effective engagement and coordination.

JAM-DEM, as noted by Lofters, is strategically poised to fulfill this objective by providing a dynamic virtual space for Jamaicans worldwide to connect and collaborate.

Expanding horizons

Shauna Chin, Vice Chair of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council (GJDC), highlighted JAM-DEM’s role in expanding relationships beyond traditional regions to encompass non-traditional areas across the globe.

This inclusive approach, spanning from the wider Caribbean to regions like the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and Africa, reflects a concerted effort to foster broader diaspora engagement and cooperation.

Bridging oceans, Connecting hearts

Echoing sentiments of unity and homeland connection, council member Asha Richards emphasized JAM-DEM’s significance as a bridge uniting Jamaicans across oceans.

Positioned as a conduit for communication, collaboration, and investment, the platform embodies the collective spirit and aspirations of Jamaicans worldwide, fostering a deeper bond with their ancestral homeland.
