A Jamaican man has been handed a sixteen-year prison term for orchestrating a deceptive sweepstakes scheme.
This scheme primarily preyed upon elderly individuals in the United States, exploiting their trust for financial gain.
Conviction and sentencing details
Damone Oakley, 41, hailing from St. James, Jamaica, faced the legal consequences of his actions in a federal court in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
The conviction comes after Oakley’s extradition to the United States in 2022, followed by his guilty plea in July to charges including mail and wire fraud.
A decade of deception
The fraudulent activities, spanning from 2010 to 2019, involved tactics to mislead victims.
Reports are that Oakley and his associates reached out to the elderly through various communication channels, including mail, texts, and phone calls, falsely informing them of winning substantial cash prizes and luxury vehicles.
However, there was a deceptive catch- the victims were instructed to pay taxes and fees to claim these non-existent winnings.
Manipulation tactics and monetary losses
Adopting aliases like “Officer Alex Logan” and “Officer Stan Valentine,” Oakley guided his victims on how to transfer their money.
According to reports, the scam did not stop at cash or wire transfers; victims were also duped into purchasing and sending high-value items like electronics, jewelry, and clothing.
These items were first sent to mail forwarding services in Florida before making their way to him in Jamaica.
