KC, Hydel snatch narrow leads, competition heats up at 2023 Champs

Defending champions Kingston College (KC) and serious contenders Hydel High School have snatched narrow leads in the Boys’ and girls’ points standings at the end of Thursday’s action at the 2023 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships inside the National Stadium.

Amani Phillips of Kingston College about to clear the bar at 1.81m to win the Class Three high jump gold medal on Thursday. Phillips defeated Selethel Johnson of Munro with 1.81m, with Richard Green finishing in third place with 1.75m.

At the end of 15 events on the boys’ side, KC has wrested a three-point lead (124-121) over early leaders Jamaica College (JC), with Calabar some respectable distance back in third place on 70 points, followed by St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in fourth place on 41, and St Jago High School completing the top five on 32 points.

At the end of eight finals on Wednesday, JC held a 13-point lead (74-61) over KC.

On the girls’ side, Hydel High School has taken a narrow, one-point lead over defending champions Edwin Allen High School (98-97), followed by Holmwood Technical High School on 73.5, St Jago High on 60, and Immaculate Conception High School rounding out the top five with 44 points.

And with JC and KC expecting to continue their keen battle on the track and in the field, the Old Hope Road-based JC suffered misfortune when they failed to advance to the Class Three 4X100m relays final.

Calabar also failed to make it to the final in the same age group.

The same can be said about the defending champions Edwin Allen High School, who lost ace sprinter Serena Cole with a hamstring injury on Wednesday night.

On the other hand, Hydel High continues to place athletes into finals, which gives them more opportunities to maximize their points tally.

In the key 400m finals on Thursday, Hydel High School won two of the three events. In Class Three, Nastassia Fletcher was top, and in Class Two Jody-Ann Daley proved best of the rest.

The Class One event was won by Rickiann Russell of Holmwood Technical.

On the boys’ side, Delano Kennedy of Edwin Allen triumphed in Class One; Tahj-Marques White of KC took Class Two, and Christopher Ellis of Calabar upset the KC pair of Jordan Rehedul and teammate Eshanee Porter on Thursday.

Friday will have 13 finals up for decision with the main highlights being several field events and the 400m hurdles.
