In the latest rankings announced by the International Cricket Council, Holder had risen two places in the bowler’s rankings to 10, ensuring he heads into the New Year rated among the elite bowlers in the longest cricket format.

As a result of his progress, he also jumped two places in the all-rounders rankings, and is only now behind Bangladesh captain Shakib-al-Hasan.

His rise comes despite missing the recent tour of Bangladesh through injury.

Holder had an outstanding year with the ball, claiming 33 wickets from six Tests at an amazing average of 11.87 – the best by any bowler in a calendar year for the last hundred years.

The 27-year-old seamer picked up 12 wickets during Sri Lanka’s three-Test tour of the Caribbean and followed up with 16 scalps in a two-Test home series against Bangladesh.

However, Holder was forced out of the return Bangladesh away series with a shoulder injury.

He is one of two West Indies players in the top 20 of the bowlers rankings, with speedster Shannon Gabriel unmoved at 13th.

Seamer Kemar Roach is the next best ranked Caribbean bowler at 24th with leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo lying 35th.

In the batting rankings, meanwhile, opener Kraigg Brathwaite remains the highest ranked West Indies batsman but has tumbled to 33rd following his wretched form in Bangladesh that brought him 22 runs in four innings.

Roston Chase is the only other Windies batsman in the top 50, lying 46th. Holder is ranked 59th.

India’s Virat Kohli heads the batting rankings while South Africa seamer Kagiso Rabada tops the bowling charts.
