The World Bank is assisting Grenada in updating its National Energy Policy (NEP) through a multi-stage process that involves receiving contributions and or comments from the public.
As a result, the general public has until April 21st, 2023 to comment and or contribute to the updated draft document which was presented to direct stakeholders on March 10 through a special virtual meeting of the sustainable development council.
“The Government of Grenada, through the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy, is seeking feedback from the public and other interested parties on the Goals and Policies towards the Update of the National Energy Policy,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The NEP is meant to guide Grenada’s energy sector in its transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy. The general policy objective is correlated with the overall National Sustainable Development Plan 2035 and the National Determined Contributions, which aim to promote sustainable development and allow Grenada to meet its emission reduction target which is a 40 per cent reduction of the 2010 emission levels by 2030,” it added.
The statement said the vision is to address the constraints and issues affecting the development of the energy sector, by increasing the share of modern renewable energy consumed in Grenada and providing more affordable access to electricity for all Grenadians, thereby contributing to a sustainable and environmentally conscious society.
Prepared in collaboration with the Spanish-based MRC Consultants and Transaction Advisers, the NEP 2023-2035 is Grenada’s overarching high-level planning document that will anchor the energy development agenda over the period 12 year period,
“It is developed around the broad themes of “a thriving economy; an energy independent nation; and sustainable and resilient energy sector and energy services,” according to the document presented to the government earlier this month.
The policy recommends a systematic and comprehensive framework to guide the country’s strategic priorities for balanced sustainable energy development over the medium term and simultaneously lays a solid foundation for Grenada’s energy transformation over the long term.
“The NEP 2023-2035 draws inspiration from Grenada’s National Sustainable Development Plan (NSDP) 2020-2035 setting out the vision for the country’s sustainable development and is grounded in Grenadian aspirations: it represents the desire of the people to improve their quality of life and living standards for this and future generations,” said the document.
