JN Bank launches new digital JN Pay Wallet

JN Bank has launched its JN Pay Wallet, a new digital tool designed to make the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), JAM-DEX, more accessible to Jamaicans. The mobile wallet enables users to pay bills, transfer funds, top up their phones, and conduct transactions such as deposits and withdrawals from both JN Bank accounts and JN Bank Intelligent ATMs.

Part of JN’s broader push to break down barriers to financial inclusion across Jamaica, the JN Pay Wallet requires only a Tax Registration Number (TRN), phone number, and email address to sign up. Importantly, a bank account is not needed to use the wallet, though users can choose to link their existing JN Bank account if they wish.

“JN Pay Wallet offers instant access to the system, unlike traditional ACH and RTGS systems that have cut-off dates and are not available on weekends. It is also available 24/7,” said Ricardo Dystant. “This means that the average Jamaican no longer has to be limited by time, or by access to physical banking infrastructure.”

Highlighting the wallet’s capabilities, Dystant added, “It is true to our mandate of ‘people first’, and driving financial inclusion. The wallet can be used to pay JPS (Jamaica Public Service), NWC (National Water Commission), and other bills. Basically, everything that is available on our JN Bank Live platform, except for wire transfers, can be paid using the wallet.”

He described the JN Pay Wallet as “instant gratification” and said its integration with JAM-DEX could lead to the creation of new tech-driven financial solutions. One standout feature, he noted, is the third-party cashout option, developed by MC Systems, a sister company of JN Bank. It allows users to send a transfer code via SMS, enabling the recipient to withdraw cash from a JN Bank Smart ATM—even if they don’t have a bank account.

“The other day, I was stuck in an important meeting and needed to pay a worker because of a burst water pipe. I did a third party cashout so that the person could pick up the money at a JN Bank Smart ATM,” Dystant recalled.

The wallet is also interoperable with QR code systems from other financial institutions, helping to foster a more integrated digital payment ecosystem. Dystant emphasized the wallet’s potential to empower the financially underserved.

“The world is moving more and more towards digital solutions, and we are following suit. The JN Pay Wallet is also an entry point to the broader financial systems. Once users engage with this digital payments system, we can engage them and guide them towards traditional banking services. We can help them open bank accounts, gain access to credit, and build long-term assets,” he said.

The wallet could also be a game-changer for entrepreneurs. “It can be a significant benefit to entrepreneurs, especially small business owners, because it provides an alternative option to receive payment, minimising the risk associated with carrying cash. Plus, it is fast, making payment easier and more convenient for shoppers,” Dystant added.

The JN Pay Wallet is available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Jair Minott, who also spoke at the launch, said the wallet features two tiers. The entry-level Tier 0 has a $50,000 transaction limit, while users seeking higher limits must upgrade to Tier 1 by submitting additional Know Your Customer (KYC) documents.

“Once you have downloaded the wallet, you will need to complete the general onboarding process using your email address, phone number, and TRN. Uploading an ID is required to upgrade to Tier 1. This could be your passport, driver’s license, or national ID. After a 24-hour verification process, you will be able to access a higher daily transaction and balance limit. The current limit is $100,000,” Minott explained.

He said that the app has already undergone internal testing and will be rolled out in collaboration with Tax Administration Jamaica in May 2025 at the Constant Spring and King Street tax offices. It is also being used at major events like Reggae Sumfest, offering a cashless option for vendors and attendees.

“These strategic partnerships demonstrate the versatility and value that the JN Pay Wallet can bring to the diverse industries in Jamaica,” Minott said.
