AAA warns homeowners of July 4th hazards ahead of long holiday weekend

As Americans gear up for a long Fourth of July weekend — with the holiday falling on a Friday this year — AAA is urging homeowners to prioritize safety amid backyard cookouts, pool parties, and fireworks celebrations.

The Independence Day weekend is a time of patriotic celebration, but also one of the most dangerous times of the year for property damage and personal injury, according to AAA – The Auto Club Group. The organization is warning of common holiday-related hazards and offering tips to reduce the risk of accidents.

“While this holiday is a time of celebration, it also brings a spike in home insurance claims related to fires, water accidents, and other hazards,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. “With so many festivities happening at home, it’s essential that people take proactive steps to protect their property and loved ones.”

🔥 Grilling Fires Peak in July

Backyard barbecues are a staple of July 4th festivities, but AAA notes that July is also the peak month for grill-related fires. The organization advises homeowners to never leave a grill unattended, keep children and pets at a safe distance, and always grill outdoors—well away from homes, decks, or trees. Long-handled tools, a nearby fire extinguisher, and a hose or bucket of water are also must-haves.

🎆 Fireworks: Enjoy the Show, Leave It to the Pros

Fireworks may be the highlight of the evening, but they also spark thousands of fires each year. In 2022 alone, fireworks were responsible for more than 31,000 fires, including over 3,500 structure fires, and nearly $109 million in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

AAA advises attending professional displays instead of lighting fireworks at home. If you do use fireworks, keep them far from homes, cars, and dry brush. Sparklers, which can burn hotter than a blowtorch, should never be handled by children. Alcohol and fireworks also don’t mix.

“A few precautions can keep the night dazzling without unwanted explosions,” Jenkins said.

🏊‍♂️ More Tips for a Safer Holiday

  • Pool Safety: Always supervise children, use flotation devices, and install safety barriers.

  • Food Safety: Cook meats thoroughly, avoid cross-contamination, and refrigerate leftovers promptly.
