Getting in shape at the gym is almost at the top of many people’s lists of New Year’s resolutions. While it’s a great place to unwind and get fit, sometimes you don’t have the time to integrate it into your hectic schedule. However, you can transform your body right in the comfort of your home with determination, consistency, discipline, and the right mindset.
Odean Godfrey Taylor, a Jamaican professional fitness trainer and owner of FunRobics Fitness in Jamaica, says getting fit can be achieved in many ways. From low-intensity exercise to weight training, flexibility exercises, and high-intensity exercise routines. However, he says a gym isn’t the answer to getting in shape, but changing your lifestyle is.
“The requirement of a gym isn’t necessary to make progress and start working towards your goals but changing your lifestyle to a healthier one and an exercise program is,” he said.
He also outlines some important factors that can assist you in meeting your fitness goals at home. He stressed the importance of:
- Knowing your fitness goals
- Being consistent
- Having or creating a training program
- Being able to manage stress
- Reducing junk food from your diet and eating in small portions
- Getting enough sleep
Though he offers virtual workout sessions to those in Jamaica and abroad, he shared that all you need is a little time and space to yourself at home and a basic workout plan.
In addition to following online workout sessions, he said the following could lead to a good fitness routine at home:
- Walking quickly up and down the stairs
- Using a jump rope
- Doing jumping jacks
- Dancing to high-energy music
- Eating the right foods and portioning each meal
- Staying motivated
While you can do several other activities to get in shape, the fitness expert emphasizes the importance of having the right mindset as it’s the key to physical results.
“Physical results only follow mental training, our perspective shapes our reality and whether we’re conscious of it or not, our mindset can have a powerful impact on our health and wellness journey,” he said.
“Your mindset is the ultimate determinant of your success. So when you get your mindset locked down, you’re well on your way to success,” he added.
Remember that the gym is not a place that will magically transform your body. While it can help meet some of your fitness goals, you can have an effective workout routine at home. Don’t depend on the gym to get in shape, start from your home. With the right mindset, an effective and consistent routine, and a healthier lifestyle, you’ll see the transformation.
