Suriname President Santokhi travels to India

Suriname President Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi is en route to India to the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention, according to an official statement.

It said Santokhi, will be the guest of honor at the event in Indore, Madhya Pradesh from January 8-10.

In addition to participating in the diaspora event, Santokhi will also hold talks with Indian President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The Suriname Communication Service (SCS) said the meetings will focus on bilateral as well as multilateral cooperation.

President Santokhi will also be the guest of honor at the Inaugural Session of the Global Investors Summit, on January 11, and will focus on aspects related to oil and gas exploration.

The SCS said on January 12-13, the Surinamese head of state will attend, virtually, the Concluding Leaders session of the Voice of the South Summit.

“This activity will provide developing countries with a platform to jointly hold deliberations and propose solution models for the many global challenges, giving substance to the theme of the Summit: Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose.”

Santokhi is not the only Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leader to be visiting India. Three CARICOM nationals, including Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, will be awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA), the highest honor conferred on overseas Indians,

The other awardees are Trinidad and Tobago judge, Justice Frank Arthur Seepersad and Suriname’s Dr. Dewanchandrebhose Sharman.
