On Monday, at the Stephen P. Clarke Center in Miami, the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women, under the Office of Community Advocacy, celebrated International Women’s Day and Women History Month with the official unveiling of an art installation curated by MUCE (My Urban Contemporary Experience).
The event featured addresses from Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz, and Vice-Chairman Oliver Gilbert, Jamaican-American Commissioner Danielle Cohen-Higgins, and other commissioners will offer remarks.
The art exhibit features multimedia work by local artists, focusing on the complexities of motherhood, particularly during the pandemic. It will be on display during the entire month of March. The ceremony was sponsored by the Commission for Women, Planned Parenthood, and the League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County. More events to honor women will take place throughout the month of March.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as Women’s History Month. These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.
The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women was created in 1971 as an advisory board to the Board of County Commissioners, the County administration, and the public at large about issues pertaining to improve their quality of life.
