A massive COVID-19 vaccination effort is now underway in Broward County, but the rollout was initially marred by challenges.

The county’s vaccine appointment portal went live last week but issues on the website prevented people from scheduling appointments.

The portal (at https://browardcovidvaccine.com/) allows residents ages 65 and older to schedule a time slot to receive the vaccine at no cost, either through a regular medical visit or at a drive-thru site. Despite the glitches, over 26,000 appointments had been made between Sunday, when the portal was back up and running, and Monday morning. Over 4,000 people have so far received vaccinations through the Broward Department of health.

There are currently three locations open where seniors 65 and older can receive the vaccine:

Tradewinds Park, 3600 West Sample Road, Coconut Creek. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, closed Friday and Saturday.

>Vista View Park, Southwest 142nd Avenue, Davie. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, closed Friday and Saturday.

>Markham Park, 160001 West State Road 84, Sunrise. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, closed Friday and Saturday.

On Tuesday, a note on the website said that called the appointment slots at each site had been filled. Broward County Mayor Steve Geller said that more vaccination sites will be open in the county soon.

Another vaccination site will open at Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, and at Central Park in Lauderhill on Friday, with another 3-5 sites possibly opening in the next two weeks or so, Geller said.

The mayor also stated that 14 hospitals in Broward have received or are receiving vaccine doses, with Memorial Healthcare System to begin vaccinations for seniors 65 and older starting on Thursday.

The Florida Department of Emergency Management has further set up vaccination “pods” at the following three senior condominiums:

  • Century Village in Deerfield Beach
  • Kings Point in Tamarac
  • Wynmoor Village in Coconut Creek

Geller said there is a limited number of vaccines available at each of those locations, and they’re available only to residents. Each community is establishing its own procedures to administer the vaccines and how to register to get one.

CVS and Walgreens will be administering the vaccines at assisted living facilities.
