MIRAMAR, Florida – The City of Miramar Police Department and Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis are partners on two key initiatives to benefit Miramar residents.
One initiative, the Community and Cops Forum is designed to promote open dialogue between Miramar residents and law enforcement. The objective of the other, the Guns for Funds Program seeks to get firearms off the streets in exchange for compensation on site.
Vice Mayor Davis said, “Our Community and Cops Forum will give our residents a chance to let their voices be heard especially on important current social issues affecting our community and our families. Additionally, the Guns for Funds Program is a great opportunity to get guns off the streets. We would rather people turn in a gun they no longer have a need for rather than run the risk of having it stolen and ending up in the wrong hands. We are committed to ensuring that residents feel safe in their community and are protected from gun violence.”
The Community and Cops Forum takes place Tuesday, October 22 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Miramar City Hall. Forum panelists include Dexter M. Williams, Miramar’s Chief of Police; Jack Tuter, Chief Judge Florida 17th Judicial Circuit Court; Brenda Forman, Broward County Clerk of Courts; Gregory Tony, Broward County Sheriff, Dale V.C. Holness, Vice Mayor of Broward County among other notable Broward County leaders.
“This is an excellent opportunity for our community to discuss important public safety issues with law enforcement and judicial experts,” said Chief Dexter M. Williams.
Discussion topics include Gun Buyback Programs, body cameras, texting while driving, marijuana versus hemp, voting rights restoration, adult civil citations as well as do’s & don’ts when stopped by a cop.
Guns for Funds is an anonymous Gun Buyback Program which will take place throughout the month of November, where Miramar residents can receive up to a $100 Gift Card for each handgun surrendered and up to $150 Gift Card for each assault rifle or shotgun turned in. Residents will have three separate opportunities to turn in their firearms. All guns brought to the events must be unloaded and placed in the trunk of residents’ vehicles. There is no limit to the number of guns dropped off, no questions asked and no identification is necessary. This effort is sponsored in part by Broward Crime Stoppers.
