LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Jamaica’s double Olympic gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce shook off a sub-par performance at the Prefontaine Classic to blaze to victory in the 100 meters at the IAAF Diamond League meet on July 5.
The 32-year-old stormed to victory in 10.74 seconds to capture gold, much faster than the 11.39 she clocked when she finished seventh at the Prefontaine Classic in the United States a week earlier.
Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith was a distant second in a season’s best 10.94, while Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast also posted a season’s best 10.93 to place third.
Fraser-Pryce said she was delighted with her performance, especially considering her slow time at the Classic. “I came to Lausanne in a very happy state of mind despite a poor performance in Stanford. I am delighted with 10.74 today. Such ups and downs make sure that you do not take anything for granted and do not get complacent,” she said after her race.
Fellow Jamaicans Stephenie-Ann McPherson and Ronald Levy copped bronze in their respective events.
McPherson finished third in the women’s 400 meters in a season’s best time of 50.88 seconds, behind eventual winner Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain in a season’s best and meet record 49.17 seconds, with Niger’s Aminatou Seyni finishing second with a personal best and national record of 49.19 seconds.
Levy clocked 13.25 seconds in the men’s 110m hurdles. The event was won by Spain’s Orlando Ortega in 13.05 seconds, with the USA’s Robert Best third in 13.11.
