The Broward County Supervisor of Elections’ Office will kick off the annual High School Voter Registration (HSVR) Drive two weeks early this year, starting March 7 – 23, 2018. The effort is in partnership with the Broward County Public Schools, and with significant participation from Broward County Private and Charter High Schools. All high schools in Broward County will have the opportunity to register their students who meet the qualifications to become registered voters.
Honoring Stoneman Douglas High School
“In honor of Stoneman Douglas High School and the increased interest from high school students, we decided to start the online voter registration drive earlier this year,” said the Supervisor of Elections’ Dr. Brenda Snipes. The Florida online voter registration website was launched last year in compliance with a 2015 Florida law that required online registration to be available by October 1, 2017. This offers students another way to register to vote or update an existing registration that is convenient, secure and user-friendly.
Broward County’s first time
This is Broward County’s first time in implementing the online voter registration during the High School Voter Registration Drive program. All Broward County High Schools will have a secured portal to register students online. To register online, students will need a Florida driver’s license or state identification card and a social security number.
On February 13th, students and faculty were trained on voter registration policies and procedures. The video conference training streamed live to the participating schools, hosted by BECON TV. The HSVR training video is available at www.browardsoe.org.
Registration drive target over 80 schools
One week after the March 13th Municipal General Election, Broward County Election officials are scheduled to visit over 80 local high schools during the period from March 19 to 23, the final week for the drive. Election Officials will be on hand to assist the students and staff as they conclude their voter registration drive. The school with the most registered students will receive the coveted brass trophy, banners and certificates. Last year, Stoneman Douglas High School registered 739 new students.
High School students who are 18 years old are eligible to register to vote if they are U.S. Citizens and have no felony convictions without their rights being restored. Students who are 16 and 17 years of age may pre-register.
The goal is to register 10,000 students this school year!
