Trinidad and Tobago entered the final day of cricket at the Bolivarian Games hoping for a golden flourish. Instead, the Lima Polo Club witnessed twin heartbreaks, as both national squads were pushed into silver-medal finishes by regional rivals Barbados and Jamaica.
The men’s team stumbled to an 11-run defeat against Barbados, while the women’s side was outmaneuvered by Jamaica, falling six wickets short in their pursuit of the title.
Men’s final: Barbados hold firm as T&T’s chase falters
The men’s showdown unfolded with a sense of momentum repeatedly slipping from Trinidad and Tobago’s grasp. Set 138 for victory, T&T never found the cohesive partnerships required for a sustained chase and eventually closed on 126 for eight.
Crystian Thurton offered brief stability with a run-a-ball 31, yet the top order’s collapse forced the lower ranks into damage control. A defiant eighth-wicket partnership of 38 between Damion Joachim (13) and Teshawon Castro (22) rekindled hope late in the innings. Their resistance kept T&T in mathematical contention, but the equation proved too steep, 20 required from the final over, and only eight materialized.
Earlier, Barbados had produced just enough scoreboard pressure thanks to a composed stand by Shian Brathwaite (55) and Tennyson Roach (42), who laid the foundation for a total of 137 for eight. T&T captain Vikash Mohan spearheaded the response with an incisive four for 22, but the target held firm in the end.
Women’s final: Nation commands the stage
The women’s final belonged to one individual more than any other: Chedean Nation of Jamaica. Her all-around display, control with the ball and clarity at the crease, became the spine of Jamaica’s gold-medal performance.
After Jamaica chose to field first, Nation struck with two for 21, combining effectively with NeishaAnn Waisome (two for 12) and Kate Wilmott (two for 22). Their collective discipline restricted T&T to 94 for eight, an innings that never recovered after the second-over dismissal of Shania Abdool.
Veteran Anisa Mohammed provided late resolve, top-scoring with an unbeaten 24, while Lee Ann Kirby added valuable support to push the total into defendable territory.
But Jamaica’s chase quickly took on a measured inevitability. Nation returned in command at the top of the order, crafting an unbeaten 35 from 44 deliveries. Her opening partnership of 47 with Chrishana McKenzie across 8.5 overs established an unshakable platform and eased Jamaica to the finish line, and to gold.
Closing tally for T&T
Despite the final-day disappointments, Trinidad and Tobago concluded their Bolivarian Games campaign with a respectable haul: one gold, four silver, and one bronze.
