UAE seal final spot as all 20 teams confirmed for 2026 T20 World Cup

AL AMERAT, Oman — The United Arab Emirates have clinched the final berth for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, cruising past Japan by eight wickets in the Asia-East Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier on Thursday.

A spirited bowling display led by Haider Ali’s 3 for 20, coupled with a fluent 70-run opening stand between Alishan Sharafu and captain Muhammad Waseem, ensured the UAE’s straightforward chase of Japan’s modest 117. Their victory not only capped off a dominant qualifying campaign but also confirmed the final line-up for next year’s expanded 20-team global event in India and Sri Lanka.

The UAE join Nepal and Oman as the last trio to secure their passage to the world stage.

The full roster: 20 nations ready for battle

The 2026 tournament will feature a truly global mix of contenders — from established heavyweights to history-making debutants.

Automatic qualifiers include co-hosts India and Sri Lanka, along with the top seven finishers from the 2024 T20 World Cup: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, the United States of America, and the West Indies.

Joining them on the basis of T20I rankings are New Zealand, Pakistan, and Ireland.

The regional qualifiers filled the remaining slots:

  • Americas: Canada secured the lone place in commanding fashion.
  • Europe: Italy, in a landmark achievement, reached their first-ever T20 World Cup alongside the Netherlands.
  • Africa: Namibia and Zimbabwe claimed the two available spots.
  • Asia-EAP: Nepal, Oman, and the UAE completed the global line-up.

The road ahead: Familiar format, fierce competition

The 2026 edition will mirror the structure of the previous tournament, maintaining the 20-team configuration. The field will be divided into four groups of five, with each team playing every other side in their group once.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage — a second round-robin phase consisting of two groups of four. From there, the top two sides in each Super Eight group will progress to the semi-finals, with the winners meeting in the grand final.

The format promises both consistency and spectacle, giving established powers little margin for error and providing emerging nations a genuine chance to make history.

A tournament of global reach and rising ambitions

As the final qualification pieces fall into place, anticipation builds for what promises to be one of the most diverse and competitive editions of the T20 World Cup yet. With newcomers like Italy entering cricket’s grandest stage and seasoned forces like India, Australia, and West Indies eyeing another title run, the 2026 tournament stands poised to deliver drama across continents.
