The heart of Caribbean culture is preparing to beat louder than ever as the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) returns to Barbados under the theme “Caribbean Roots; Global Excellence.”
As the largest cultural and artistic event in the region, CARIFESTA continues its proud tradition of showcasing the diversity, resilience, and brilliance of Caribbean creativity on a global stage.
Held biennially and hosted by member states of CARICOM, Carifesta is a demonstration of regional unity and cultural celebration. The festival, which was established in 1972 by CARICOM Heads of Government, has grown into a cornerstone of Caribbean identity, dedicated to celebrating the arts, fostering Caribbean unity, and advancing the region’s culture both regionally and internationally.
This year’s edition in Barbados is already generating major buzz, with Jamaica set to lead a 100-strong delegation spanning traditional and contemporary expressions. Attendees can look forward to captivating displays in dance, traditional folk, theatre, stand-up comedy, and film, all carrying the unmistakable Jamaican flair and storytelling tradition. Well known Jamaican comedians Owen “ Blacka” Ellis and Chris “Johnny” Daley will also be a part of the traveling group, while reggae artists Warrior King, Morgan Heritage, Jesse Royal and Taurus Riley all received special invitations from Barbados.
Other nations are also preparing to make their mark. Bermuda has announced an 18-member contingent, while St. Kitts and Nevis will be proudly represented by an 80-member team, and the Cayman Islands will bring 27 talented performers and artists to the festival. These diverse delegations promise a rich mosaic of Caribbean culture from ancestral rhythms and folklore to modern cinematic expression and theatrical innovation.
Adding to the significance of this year’s festival, the closing ceremony will be held on August 31, aligning with the International Day for People of African Descent. This symbolic timing serves as a powerful reminder of the African heritage that underpins so much of Caribbean identity, creativity, and resilience.
