Alkaline delivers marathon performance at New Rules Festival

Alkaline once again proved why he remains one of dancehall’s most enigmatic and consistent hitmakers, headlining his much-anticipated New Rules Festival at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium over the weekend. The event stretched into the early hours of the morning, wrapping well after 3 a.m., and featured a solid lineup of dancehall talent including Tifa, Silk Boss, Brysco, Intence, Armani, and Munga Honorable.

The night opened with veteran dancehall diva Tifa, who reminded patrons exactly why she remains one of the genre’s sharpest lyricists. Her high-energy set fused crowd favorites with razor-sharp delivery, setting the tone for the explosive night ahead.

Next up was Silk Boss, who enjoyed what many considered a hometown moment—being from Irwin in neighboring St. James. The young artiste, known for his emotionally charged lyrics and melodic flow, thrilled fans with performances of his biggest tracks, showcasing his range and connection to the audience.

Brysco and Armani followed with commendable sets, each delivering with confidence and crowd control. Armani’s performance took a turn for the unexpected when he closed with an expletive-laced remark aimed at fellow entertainer Valiant. While the jab raised eyebrows, the artiste later downplayed any beef, saying, “We just a commit to doing good music and giving the fans music they will love.”

Munga Honorable, the self-proclaimed “Gangsta Ras,” ignited waves of nostalgia as the penultimate act. With a catalog spanning over a decade, Munga ran through a series of hits that had the audience singing and dancing in unison. His signature chant “yes yess” and effortless stage presence whipped the crowd into a full-blown frenzy.

But the night truly belonged to Alkaline, who took the stage just before 2 a.m. Dressed in a sequined blazer, the Vendetta Boss unleashed hit after hit from his deep catalogue—”Champion Boy,” “After All,” “Formula,” “Ocean Wave,” and many more. His performance was a calculated blend of grit and charisma, underscoring his place in the dancehall elite.

Just when fans thought it was all over, Alkaline surprised the crowd with a quick wardrobe change before returning for a 20-minute encore. The unexpected finale sent fans into a final roar, capping a night of musical intensity and celebration of the culture.

The 2025 Jamaican edition of New Rules Festival once again lived up to its name, delivering high-powered performances and unforgettable moments that reaffirmed dancehall’s vibrancy and staying power on the Jamaican entertainment calendar.
