Miami-Dade to enforce school zone speeding violations during summer school

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers that school zone speed enforcement will remain in effect at select county schools offering summer classes from Friday, June 20, through July 25, 2025.

The enforcement is part of the School Zone Speeding Program, aimed at protecting students during summer school sessions. Speed limits will be strictly enforced starting at 7:00 a.m. each day, continuing throughout school hours, including 30 minutes before classes begin and 30 minutes after dismissal.

The enforcement is authorized under Florida House Bill 657, signed into law in 2023, which allows the use of automated speed enforcement cameras to monitor and ticket drivers exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 10 mph in active school zones. A $100 Notice of Violation will be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, accompanied by photographic evidence, including the date, time, and location of the violation.

Cameras will be active throughout the entire school day, including:

  • 30 minutes before and after the start of any scheduled breakfast program

  • 30 minutes before and after the beginning of classes

  • 30 minutes before and after school dismissal

The City of Miami Gardens, along with other municipalities in Miami-Dade, has implemented the program for the 2024–2025 academic year and beyond, as part of a broader effort to improve pedestrian and student safety.

Motorists are urged to remain alert and observe posted speed limits in all school zones, regardless of whether school is in session for the summer. Violators risk fines, citations, and contributing to unsafe road conditions near schools.
