Qiana Joseph ignites West Indies Women to tour-opening victory

CANTERBURY, England – With confidence in her stride and fire in her bat, Qiana Joseph unleashed a blistering half-century to lift the West Indies Women to an emphatic 80-run triumph over the ECB Women’s Development XI in their opening tour clash at the historic Spitfire Ground.

Striding out after West Indies were sent in to bat, Joseph wasted no time asserting dominance, hammering 62 off just 35 balls, peppering the boundary ropes with 10 fours and two soaring sixes. Her innings set the tone for what became a commanding Windies performance on both sides of the ball.

Opening onslaught: Joseph and Matthews build early momentum

Joseph and captain Hayley Matthews forged a formidable opening stand of 64 runs in just seven overs, carving through the Development XI’s attack with precision and aggression. Matthews added a steady 20, providing the perfect foil for Joseph’s explosive hitting.

The partnership was eventually broken when left-arm spinner Phoebe Brett got Matthews to edge one to the field—her first of two scalps on the day. But it was Joseph’s dismissal that truly shifted the momentum momentarily.

Mid-innings wobble, late-innings surge

Joseph’s departure triggered a mini collapse, with the Windies Women slipping from a dominant position to losing four wickets for just 19 runs. But they weren’t down for long.

Steadying the innings at the back end, Aaliyah Alleyne contributed a composed 20, while Jannillea Glasgow provided a dramatic late push, smashing 18 not out off only six deliveries. Shabika Gajnabi also chipped in with an unbeaten 11, helping push the final total to a competitive 175 for four from 20 overs.

Brett was the most successful bowler for the home side, returning 2 for 35 from her full quota.

Development XI falter under pressure

Chasing 176, the Development XI made a steady start, reaching 45 for one, but the pressure of the rising required run rate soon took its toll. The hosts unraveled dramatically, losing six wickets for just 25 runs, as West Indies’ bowlers tightened the screws and dictated the tempo.

Only Charlotte Stubbs offered any real resistance, crafting 35 from 31 balls in a lone stand against a relentless Windies attack.

Spin twins Ramharack and Fletcher shut the door

The chase was decisively snuffed out by spinners Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher, who mesmerized the Development XI batters with flight, guile, and sharp turn.

Ramharack was near unplayable, finishing with 2 for 11, while Fletcher added her own punch with 2 for 18, wrapping up a dominant all-round performance for the touring Caribbean side.

With this commanding performance, the West Indies Women have sent a clear message as they begin their tour of England. In Joseph, they found a spark; in their bowlers, a seal of assurance. If this opening act is anything to go by, fans can expect fireworks from the maroon warriors this summer.
