A stunning, near-historic innings from Johann Jeremiah lifted the Windward Islands Infernos into the playoff stage of the West Indies Breakout League, as they demolished the Jamaica Titans by a commanding 86 runs Tuesday night at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
Jeremiah’s blistering 97 off 50 deliveries, studded with eight sixes and seven fours, powered the Infernos to a tournament-high 211 for six—a total the shell-shocked Titans never came close to challenging.
The comprehensive victory saw the Infernos surge past the Barbados Pelicans (20 points) into second place on 22 points, with a pivotal clash against the Leeward Islands Thunder (19 points) still to come. The playoff race now hinges on that final group-stage match, with multiple scenarios still in play based on the bonus points system.
Jeremiah lights it up
In what will be remembered as one of the most dominant batting displays of the tournament, Jeremiah came within inches of etching his name in the record books as the first centurion in Breakout League history.
Opening alongside skipper Alick Athanaze, the pair stitched together a solid 88-run partnership in 11 overs, setting the tone for a blistering innings. After Athanaze departed for 34, Jeremiah joined forces with Teddy Bishop to unleash another offensive—54 runs off just 18 balls—as the Infernos surged past the 140 mark.
With a century within grasp, Jeremiah was bowled on 97 by off-spinner Ramaal Lewis, falling heartbreakingly short of a milestone but leaving behind devastation in his wake.
The Infernos wobbled momentarily after his exit, losing Shadrack Descarte, Dillon Douglas, and Ryan John for minimal contributions. But Bishop held firm, striking a rapid 44 off 22 to ensure Windwards became the first team to breach the 200-run barrier in the tournament.
The Titans’ bowlers had few answers, though Jeavor Royal (2-19) and Anthony Dackers (2-33) managed to contain some of the late-innings damage.
Titans toppled before takeoff
The Titans’ chase never took flight. Keon Johnson and Ryan John tore through the top order with surgical precision, removing Leroy Lugg, Jordan Johnson, Kirk McKenzie, and Andrew Rambaran inside the powerplay. With the scoreboard reading a calamitous 26 for four, the Titans were left with damage control rather than hope.
A defiant 35 from Deethmar Anderson and a composed 25 from Ramaal Lewis offered resistance, but the target proved mountainous. The innings ended at 125 all out in 18 overs, confirming the Titans’ exit and the Infernos’ ascent.
Bowling honors were shared among the Infernos attack, with Ryan John, Darel Cyrus, and Gaston all picking up two wickets apiece, ensuring that Jeremiah’s batting brilliance was backed by a ruthless team performance.
All eyes on Thunder-Infernos showdown
With Trinidad and Tobago Legions (31 points) already securing their playoff berth, the third and final spot remains in flux. If the Leeward Islands Thunder defeat the Infernos in their final fixture, they will advance at the Pelicans’ expense. However, under the tournament’s bonus points system, even a narrow defeat could be enough for the Thunder—setting the stage for a high-stakes finale.
For now, the spotlight remains on Johann Jeremiah, whose bat set the Breakout League ablaze and whose performance might very well define Windwards’ postseason destiny.
