Online jail records show the 29-year-old sprinter was taken into custody Thursday by the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Dania Beach. He is facing a battery charge.

Kerley was slated to compete in the Grand Slam Track event in Miramar, scheduled to run from Friday through Sunday.

“Fred Kerley was arrested last night. The matter is under active investigation, and all inquiries should be directed to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office,” Grand Slam Track said in a statement Friday. “Fred will not compete this weekend. We have no further comment at this time.”

This marks Kerley’s second arrest in South Florida this year. On the night of January 2, Miami Beach police accused him of assaulting an officer during an incident near the 100 block of Ninth Street on South Beach.

According to Local 10 News, in the previous case, police said Kerley approached an active scene with an “aggressive demeanor” and was concerned about his vehicle parked nearby. Officers told him to go around the area, but he allegedly continued to argue and tried to “force” his way past two officers, grabbing the hand of one.

Police say Kerley pushed an officer, sparking a struggle that involved multiple officers. At one point, an officer “delivered multiple hammer fists” to Kerley’s head and elbowed him in the back, according to the arrest report. Officers later used a stun gun to subdue him and placed him in handcuffs. Authorities noted that while in custody, Kerley managed to remove one of the stun gun probes.

In the January incident, Kerley was charged with felony battery on a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Kerley won a silver medal in the 100 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and earned bronze at the 2024 Games in Paris.
