Sizzla Kalonji honored in South Florida for 30 years of musical greatness

Reggae and dancehall icon Sizzla Kalonji was officially recognized for his three-decade-long contribution to music and culture with a proclamation presented by Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, Oliver Mair, during an intimate yet star-studded event in South Florida.

Held at Lumé Bistro in Pembroke Pines on Thursday, the celebration drew a powerful lineup of reggae royalty and cultural influencers. The energy in the room was electric, with deep reverence for a man whose voice, lyrics, and presence have shaped global consciousness through roots reggae, culture, and dancehall across more than 90 albums.

Sizzla’s career began in the early 1990s under the mentorship of producer Philip “Fatis” Burrell of Xterminator Records, where he quickly gained attention for his powerful vocals and spiritually charged lyrics that blended Rastafarian ideology with gritty social commentary.

The event, dubbed “Kalonji Konversations,” marked the launch of a year-long tribute to Sizzla’s 30th anniversary in the music industry, culminating in a major event set for October 19, 2025.

Among those who came out to honor the living legend were members of the Marley family — Stephen, Damian, Ky-Mani, Julian, and Yohan Marley — alongside reggae and dancehall mainstays like Baby Cham, Anthony B, Nadine Sutherland, Don Yute, and DJ Karim.

The night pulsed with high-energy sets and musical selections from the culture’s top selectors: Jazzy T of Renaissance, Tony Matterhorn, Supa Twitch, and Foota Hype, each adding their unique sonic flavor to the occasion.

Sizzla had his U.S. visa reinstated in 2024, following its revocation in 2019. With travel permissions restored, fans across the U.S. can look forward to more live appearances and celebrations as the anniversary series unfolds.

In an Instagram post following the event, Consul General Mair wrote: “The support for Sizzla was felt, as his brothers and sisters in music… were out in full effect.”
