Trinidad and Tobago’s rising Soca sensation, 14-year-old Jalessa Lazarus, is set to take the stage at the upcoming Junior Soca Monarch semi-finals.
Performing her track Waistline, written by Jason ‘Shaft’ Bishop and produced by Millbeats Entertainment, Jalessa brings a fresh perspective on youth enjoying Carnival—free from vulgarity but full of energy.
Balancing her budding music career with academics, Jalessa is currently enrolled in a private secondary institution, where she focuses on four primary subjects while pursuing her passion for music and performing arts. Her mother, Phylicia, made the decision to transfer her from a traditional school setting to better accommodate her demanding schedule. “As a parent, I felt it was important to do what was necessary for my child’s well-being,” she said, highlighting that Jalessa also trains in guitar, piano, vocals, and dance.
Despite her young age, Jalessa has already built a strong network of musical peers, including Yung Kymani, Wizabella, and Zachary Ransom. She will also perform at Kids Carnival Kingdom and is working on a collaborative single with another emerging artist. “I just love performing for audiences, sharing my talent, and growing as an artist,” she said.
Jalessa’s journey has not been without challenges. As a child, she experienced bullying, particularly over the loss of her father before she was born. Her mother addressed the issue head-on, providing love and reassurance. Now, Jalessa hopes authorities take stronger action to address bullying in schools.
Fans will have the chance to meet her at a special event on February 23 at Solange Fashion, East Gates Mall, Trincity. With the Junior Soca Monarch finals set for February 25, Jalessa Lazarus is eager for the support of her fellow Trinidadians. “I’m as ready as I’ll ever be and excited to be part of the Carnival experience once again,” she said.
