Scheduled to unfold from January 6–11, 2025, the event will feature a thrilling line-up of 16 teams, including Mexico’s formidable U-17 National Team, alongside squads from Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala, Panama, and Mexico’s Professional Third Division League.

This monumental occasion arrives at a pivotal moment for the young Reggae Boyz as they intensify preparations for the CONCACAF U-17 World Cup Qualifiers, slated for February 2025 in Guatemala.

High-pressure matches to sharpen Reggae Boyz for World Cup Qualifiers

The Jamaican squad is grouped in Group H for the CONCACAF Qualifiers, where they will face the challenges posed by El Salvador, St. Lucia, and the Cayman Islands. With the group winners earning a coveted spot in the U-17 World Cup, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

At the Torneo del Sol, the Reggae Boyz are set for a demanding schedule, starting with Selection South on January 6, Selection North on January 7, and the Liga Premier Team on January 8. These clashes will serve as a proving ground for the squad, giving the team invaluable exposure to high-caliber competition.

Coach Butler focuses on fine-tuning ahead of February showdown

The Jamaican team has already laid a solid foundation through rigorous training camps held in both Jamaica and the United States over recent months. The squad has honed their skills in five friendly internationals, securing an impressive record of four wins and one draw, and participated in seven domestic matches, achieving three victories.

“This tournament provides the perfect platform for us to compete against top-level national teams,” remarked Head Coach Altimont ‘Freddie’ Butler. “It’s a crucial step as we approach the final stretch of preparation for the World Cup Qualifiers in Guatemala. Playing at this level allows us to evaluate our players under pressure and refine our tactics as we finalize the squad.”

JFF President hails opportunity to showcase Jamaican talent

President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Michael Ricketts, celebrated the invitation as a testament to the international respect Jamaica’s football continues to command. “We are grateful to the Mexican Federation for this opportunity,” Ricketts stated. “Our young players will gain invaluable experience from this tournament, which is vital for their development and readiness for the COCACAF WCQ.”

With anticipation running high, the Torneo del Sol offers a chance for the young Reggae Boyz to not only showcase their burgeoning talent but also solidify their readiness for the global stage.
