JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — In a thrilling spectacle of strategy and investment, West Indies cricket stars Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Rovman Powell and Shamar Joseph found themselves at the center of intense bidding during the second day of the 2025 IPL Mega Auction on Monday.
The quartet, known for their dynamic performances in the shortest format of the game, landed contracts with prominent franchises, cementing their roles on the global T20 stage.
However, the auction also held disappointment for several other West Indians, as players like Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Akeal Hosein, Shai Hope, Kyle Mayers, and Roston Chase went unsold, leaving fans and analysts speculating on their future opportunities.
Sherfane Rutherford, a 26-year-old power-hitter, emerged as the West Indian with the largest payday, signing with the Gujarat Titans for a staggering $317,000. Rutherford, whose base price was set at $182,000, sparked a bidding war between the Mumbai Indians and the Titans.
The action began with Mumbai’s initial bid of $243,000, which was swiftly countered by Gujarat at $268,000. Mumbai escalated the stakes to $292,000, only for Gujarat to deliver the final, decisive bid.
Despite limited appearances in the IPL — 10 matches split between the Delhi Capitals in 2019 and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2022 — Rutherford’s versatility and explosive potential made him a hot commodity. Reflecting on his IPL journey, which included stints with Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kolkata Knight Riders, this contract signifies his steady rise in the cricketing echelons.
Shepherd and Powell land with IPL Giants
Joining Rutherford in the IPL arena are two other formidable West Indies players. All-rounder Romario Shepherd was snapped up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for $182,000, a testament to his prowess with both bat and ball. Shepherd’s ability to deliver under pressure has long been a hallmark of his game, making him a valuable asset for any franchise.
Meanwhile, West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the same price. Known for his muscular hitting and astute leadership, Powell’s addition to KKR promises to bolster the franchise’s middle order.
In a notable move, young pacer Shamar Joseph also managed to find a buyer as the Lucknow Super Giants exercised their right-to-match (RTM) clause to counter the Mumbai Indians’ $91,000 bid. Joseph’s raw pace and promise of evolution made him an intriguing pick, setting the stage for his IPL debut.
While the auction brought good news for some, it was a quieter affair for others. Established players such as Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosein, along with T20 specialists like Brandon King, failed to attract bids, a development that has raised eyebrows. Despite their proven capabilities, they will have to wait for future opportunities to showcase their talents in the IPL.
The contracts secured by Rutherford, Shepherd, Powell, and Joseph underscore the enduring appeal of West Indies players in franchise cricket. As these athletes prepare to light up the IPL, fans across the Caribbean and beyond will be eagerly awaiting their exploits in one of the most celebrated T20 leagues in the world.
