GFF calls for Jamaal Shabazz’s resignation amid recent setbacks

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Executive Committee has reportedly requested that Jamaal Shabazz, head coach of the Guyana Golden Jaguars, step down from his role.

According to a report from Stabroek News on Friday, the Trinidadian coach, who has had multiple tenures with Guyana’s national team, was asked earlier in the week to submit his resignation. However, it remains unclear if he has officially done so, as no termination notice has been issued by the GFF.

A source close to the federation said, “Shabazz was asked to resign by the GFF Executive Committee earlier this week. Wayne Dover is expected to manage the team for the remainder of the year until the GFF opens applications for a new coach.”

Disappointing performances

The source indicated that Shabazz’s support of a competing leadership slate during the last GFF election may have contributed to the call for his resignation, alongside recent disappointing performances in the CONCACAF Nations League A, which led to Guyana’s relegation.

Shabazz, who first coached the Golden Jaguars in 2005, returned in 2021 for his fourth tenure, succeeding former head coach Márcio Máximo. He had previously managed the team during notable highs, including a climb to a historic FIFA ranking of 86th in 2010, up from a low of 185th two years prior.

Despite the recent struggles, several players reportedly still support Shabazz’s leadership. Attempts to contact the coach for comment were unsuccessful.

Currently, Guyana sits at 161st in FIFA’s world rankings and holds 20th place in CONCACAF positioning 11th among the Caribbean Football Union’s 31 member nations.
