DUBAI, UAE – Despite captain Hayley Matthews’ impressive four-wicket performance and Chinelle Henry’s battling, unbeaten 59, West Indies Women fell to a 20-run defeat against India Women in their T20 World Cup warm-up match on Sunday at the ICC Academy Ground.
Matthews wreaked havoc with the ball, taking 4-17 in her four overs, helping reduce India to 23 for three early in their innings. However, Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the ship with a composed half-century, scoring 52 from 40 balls, and along with Yastika Bhatia (24), lifted India to 141 for eight from their 20 overs.
A valiant knock
In response, West Indies never recovered after losing Matthews for a duck and Chedean Nation for just four runs, slumping to 13 for three. Henry led the fightback with a valiant knock of 59 not out from 48 balls, including two sixes and six fours, but with little support, the West Indies could only manage 121 for eight in their 20 overs.
Pooja Vastrakar did the early damage for India, taking 3-20, while Deepti Sharma supported with 2-11, ensuring West Indies’ run chase fizzled despite Henry’s resistance.
West Indies will look to regroup as they face defending champions Australia in their next warm-up game on Tuesday.
