Jamaican star forward Khadija Shaw was forced to miss Manchester City’s crucial Champions League qualifier against Paris FC on Wednesday after the club failed to submit her visa application in time.
Shaw, Manchester City’s all-time leading goal scorer, could not make the trip to France for the first leg of the second-round qualifying match. Reports indicated that the 27-year-old striker visited the French embassy on Tuesday morning in hopes of securing an expedited visa, but the application was denied.
City, who finished as Women’s Super League (WSL) runners-up to Chelsea last season, have struggled to reach the Champions League group stage for the past three seasons. The outcome of the second leg, scheduled for September 26, will determine whether they advance to the group stage this year.
Shaw, who was the top scorer in last season’s WSL, also earned both the WSL Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year awards for her exceptional 2023-24 campaign.
