The flow of passengers between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic has seen an astonishing 1,600% increase since Arajet’s historic first direct flight on November 14, 2022.
While the number of travelers between the two nations was virtually non-existent in 2020, the figure surged to 3,300 passengers in 2022. By June 2024, this number had already exceeded 58,000, marking a significant milestone in regional air connectivity.
This impressive growth was highlighted by the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Jamaica, which noted the achievement as part of a broader report on the 10 most significant accomplishments of the diplomatic mission over the past three and a half years. The embassy, led by Ambassador Angie Martínez, has overseen more than 500 milestones during this period.
In 2022, the Dominican Embassy in Jamaica secured a special permit from the Jamaican government, allowing Dominican airlines to operate direct flights between the two countries, despite the absence of a signed Air Services Agreement at the time.
“Achieving air connectivity between the Dominican Republic and Jamaica has been the true game changer in bilateral relations,” said Ambassador Martínez. “The 1,600% increase in passenger flow is a clear example of how these relations have transformed.”
Arajet’s CEO and founder, Victor Pacheco, expressed pride in the route’s success, emphasizing the airline’s role in strengthening diplomatic ties. “We are extremely proud to have contributed to strengthening diplomatic ties between the Dominican Republic and Jamaica,” said Pacheco. “This increase in passenger flow demonstrates the demand and potential of this connection, alongside our dedication to offering high-quality services at an accessible price.”
Before the introduction of direct flights, travelers between the two countries had to endure stopovers in the U.S., Panama, or the Turks and Caicos Islands, turning a simple one-hour flight into a journey of up to 16 hours. Arajet’s direct route has not only cut travel times but has also reduced ticket prices by approximately 60%, making it more affordable for passengers.
“Now, we’ve simplified this process, allowing passengers to enjoy a fast, efficient journey,” added Pacheco. “Our goal is to continue being a bridge that unites our peoples, supporting economic and social development in the region.”
The Dominican Embassy also announced that the governments of both nations have concluded negotiations for the long-awaited General Air Services Agreement, which had been stalled for over 12 years.
Improved trade between Jamaica and Dominican Republic
The direct flight between the Dominican Republic and Jamaica is not just an achievement in air connectivity but also a catalyst for increased trade and investments. Since 2020, Dominican exports to Jamaica have nearly doubled, from $74 million pre-pandemic to $134 million in 2022, with projections of $145 million by the end of 2023.
Additionally, the Dominican Embassy has attracted over $65 million in new investments, with a forecast of $600 million, particularly in the tourism sector.
“Air connectivity represents a beautiful example for the region, proving that we can break down myths like the lack of air connectivity in the Caribbean,” said Martínez.
