Reggae sensation Etana has once again enchanted music lovers with the release of her eighth studio album, Nectar of the Gods, which launched on July 26, 2024.
This latest offering from the two-time Grammy-nominated artist highlights her versatility, soulful melodies, and profound lyrical depth.
The project began taking shape in 2022, with Etana focusing on crafting timeless music rather than following a specific direction. The album’s lead single, “Don’t Give Up,” addresses serious issues such as hardship and suicide among young women, drawing inspiration from tragic news stories and the often-hidden struggles related to cultural taboos surrounding incest and abuse. In a recent interview, Etana shared, “I wrote ‘Don’t Give Up’ to remind those who may consider suicide that life is worth living.”
Nectar of the Gods boasts several notable collaborations, featuring artists such as Shatta Wale, the Ghanaian dancehall superstar known for his work with Beyoncé; Big Youth, the legendary Jamaican deejay; Bugle, renowned for his socially conscious lyrics; Randy Valentine, who blends reggae with dancehall; Samini, an award-winning Ghanaian musician; Mr. Cheeks, the acclaimed rapper from Lost Boyz; and JonFX, the Billboard chart-topping producer.
Tracks like “Grateful,” with its horn-infused melody celebrating gratitude, and “Mr. Jones,” a sensual tune with mellow piano and guitar, exemplify Etana’s skill in merging powerful messages with captivating music. Other standout songs include “Jah Never Fail,” featuring Big Youth, and “Train,” with JonFX, which showcase Etana’s distinctive vocal style and emotional range.
Etana’s career began with her debut album, The Strong One, in 2008, featuring hits like “Wrong Address” and “I Am Not Afraid.” Following this, she released Free Expressions (2011), Better Tomorrow (2013), and I Rise (2014) under VP Records.
After going independent, Etana released Reggae Forever (2018) with Tads International, and later Dimensions EP (2019), Gemini (2020), and Pamoja (2021) under her own Freemind Music imprint. Both Reggae Forever and Pamoja earned her Grammy nominations for Best Reggae Album.
With Nectar of the Gods, Etana continues to cement her place as a leading voice in reggae music, delivering a powerful and heartfelt collection of songs that resonate with fans across the globe.
