A pedestrian is dead and investigations are ongoing following a fatal crash in Pompano Beach on Wednesday afternoon.
According to detectives from the Broward Sheriff Office, at approximately 4:22 p.m. on July 10, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of traffic crash with injuries in the 2500 block of East Atlantic Boulevard. BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2014 Toyota Corolla who has been identified as Howard Yontef, was heading eastbound on East Atlantic Boulevard in the right thru lane approaching the 2500 block. At the same time, the pedestrian, Elena Mijajlovic, was walking north near Southeast 25th Avenue and stepped into the eastbound lanes of traffic, outside of a designated crosswalk.
The front of Yontef’s vehicle struck Mijajlovic in the right thru lane. Paramedics transported Mijajlovic to Broward Health North where she was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Detectives say Yontef remained on scene and was cooperative during the investigation. Neither driver impairment, excessive speed nor mechanical malfunction are considered contributing factors in the crash.
