CWI announces overhaul in selection system with focus on scouting and strategy

Cricket West Indies (CWI) director of cricket, Miles Bascombe, announced that incoming selectors for both the men’s and women’s teams will operate under a “new and improved” selection system.

This development follows the departure of former West Indies captains Desmond Haynes and Ann Browne-John from their roles as lead selectors.

Bascombe, a former batsman for Combined Campuses & Colleges and Windward Islands, expressed gratitude for the contributions of Haynes and Browne-John in a news release. Haynes, who took on the role in January 2022, and Browne-John, who was appointed in October 2019, completed their contracts on June 30.

Quest for excellence in selection

The CWI emphasized its commitment to enhancing the selection process with ongoing restructuring efforts, aiming to implement the new system following ratification at the CWI directors’ meeting later this month. “We are committed to a selection system that reflects the current needs of our cricketing landscape, which will give us the best chance to identify and develop talent across all levels,” Bascombe stated.

The new system will prioritize scouting, depth charting, alignment with cricket strategy, and human resource management. These changes are part of a comprehensive plan devised by the Cricket Development and Performance Committee after thorough deliberation.

Acknowledging contributions

In his remarks, Bascombe highlighted the significant impact of Haynes and Browne-John during their tenures. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Haynes and Mrs. Browne-John for their dedicated service as lead selectors. Their insights and commitment have been invaluable to our cricketing endeavours,” he said.

Under their leadership, both the men’s and women’s teams have shown improvements in the world rankings, a testament to their effective selection strategies and contributions to the sport in the Caribbean. “CWI acknowledges the pivotal roles that both individuals have played in this achievement,” the release noted.

The transition to the new selection system represents a forward-looking approach aimed at sustaining and enhancing the performance of West Indies cricket on the global stage.
