Left-hander Nicholas Pooran has been included in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup team of the tournament, which concluded in Barbados on Saturday.
The 29-year-old emerged as the West Indies’ leading batsman in the tournament, finishing with 228 runs at an average of 38 and a strike rate of 146.
Pooran’s standout performance came in the group stage against Afghanistan, where he delivered a stunning 98 off 53 balls, featuring half-a-dozen fours and eight sixes. This innings helped West Indies secure a comprehensive 104-run victory. Despite this, the West Indies team failed to advance beyond the Super Eight stage after an unbeaten run through the group stage.
He was the sole representative from the West Indies to make it into the ICC team of the tournament. Champions India dominated the line-up with six players, including captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, and Arshdeep Singh. Rohit was particularly impressive, recording three half-centuries, while seamers Bumrah (15 wickets) and Arshdeep Singh (17 wickets) led the tournament in wickets.
Afghan left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi, who also claimed 17 wickets, secured a place in the team, along with South African speedster Anrich Nortje (15 wickets) and Afghan leg-spinning captain Rashid Khan (14 wickets).
India clinched their second T20 World Cup title by narrowly defeating South Africa in the final at Kensington Oval, winning by seven runs.
