This commitment was highlighted during the World Oceans Day event at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, organized by Earth Ambassadeurs.

Proactive steps in marine conservation

In his address, Smith detailed the nation’s active participation in global marine conservation efforts.

Jamaica has taken significant strides, including the adoption of international initiatives by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) aimed at reducing marine pollution from the transport and fisheries sectors.

These measures are part of a broader commitment to adhere to the 2023 IMO strategy on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission, which targets a net-zero emission from shipping by 2050.

Empowering youth in environmental stewardship

During the ceremony, the importance of youth involvement in environmental preservation was emphasized.

This engagement at local, national, and international levels is critical in driving significant environmental changes.

Smith also made a call to the community to protect the oceans and the environment as a legacy for future generations.
